What is Screen Printing?
Screen printing is a widely utilized technique, that involves transferring designs onto diverse surfaces using a stencil made of mesh screen, along with a squeegee and ink. This method is particularly prevalent in crafting high-quality, enduring designs on items like t-shirts and posters. The stencil selectively blocks areas where ink is not desired, allowing it to permeate through the open sections to form the desired pattern. The process typically entails securing the item to be printed onto a flat pallet, positioning the screen over it, and then applying ink with a squeegee. Finally, the printed item undergoes a curing process to ensure the design’s permanence.

Different Print Types
Plastisol
Plastisol ink stands as a prevalent choice for fabric screen printing in the United States. Comprising PVC particles suspended in a liquid plasticizer, this ink transforms when heated: the plasticizer evaporates, allowing the PVC particles to amalgamate into a robust film atop the fabric. Renowned for its exceptional opacity, plastisol ink delivers vibrant hues on fabrics of varying shades, whether light or dark. Its resistance to fading, cracking, and peeling further solidifies its popularity among creators of custom-printed apparel and textile goods.
Waterbase
Water-based screen printing ink consists of pigments suspended in a primarily water-based mixture. This type of ink offers a versatile range of options, allowing for both a weathered, vintage appearance and vibrant, bold colors. One of the primary advantages of water-based inks is their light, barely noticeable texture on the printed material. Despite being often promoted as environmentally friendly, it’s important to note that they may not necessarily be more eco-conscious than modern plastisol inks.
Discharge
Discharge ink, used on dark-colored organic fabrics, contains a discharge agent that, when heated, removes the dye, revealing a bleached surface. This ink also incorporates pigments that permeate the fabric and are exposed by the discharge process. The outcome resembles vibrant, opaque prints achieved with water-based ink on white garments, but on dark fabrics. Known for its ability to impart a soft, vibrant appearance to t-shirts, discharge ink’s full softness usually appears after washing. Note that discharge ink only works with certain organic materials and dyes, and it does not work on cotton pigment-dyed items.
